Metafields

Show product ratings, per-product details and other custom data in Vellora with metafields and dynamic sources.

Metafields store extra information on products, collections and other resources, such as a fit rating or a list of ingredients. Vellora reads a few metafields directly and lets you connect any block setting to a metafield, so each product can show its own value.

Product ratings

Vellora shows star ratings on product cards and in the Product rating block on product pages. It reads Shopify's standard product rating metafields:

Metafield Type Used for
reviews.rating Rating The star rating
reviews.rating_count Integer The number of reviews, shown in brackets

Most review apps fill these in for you. Check your app's settings for an option to sync ratings to metafields. Products without a rating don't show stars.

To hide ratings on product cards, turn off Theme settings > Product cards > Show product rating. On the product page, remove or hide the Product rating block.

Connect a setting to a metafield

Most text, rich text, image, URL and page settings can take their value from a metafield instead of a fixed value. Shopify calls this a dynamic source.

  1. Create the metafield definition. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects, choose Products and click Add definition. Give it a name, such as "Best for", and a type.
  2. Fill in the value on each product. Open a product and find the field in the Metafields card.
  3. In the theme editor, open the product template, select the block and click the Connect dynamic source icon next to the setting.
  4. Choose your metafield.

A connected setting is empty on products without a value. Blocks such as Chips, Labels and Popup then hide themselves, but check the others on a product with no value.

Useful connections in Vellora

Block or section Setting Metafield type to use
Chips Chips Single line text, with values separated by commas, such as "Dry, Sensitive, Combination"
Fit scale Position Single line text holding a number from 0 to 100. Below 34 reads as the left label, above 66 as the right label. An empty value counts as 0, so use an alternate template for products without one.
Fit scale Note Single line text, such as "Model wears size M"
Collapsible row Content Rich text, such as care instructions
Collapsible row Content from a page Page reference, to share one page across products
Popup Page Page reference, such as a size guide per product type
Labels First label and others Single line text, such as "Limited edition"
Product details Values and labels Single line text
Text Text Single line text

Every block and setting is listed in the Product information reference.

Category metafields and swatches

When you set a product category, Shopify suggests category metafields such as Color, Fabric or Size. Connecting a product option to the Color category metafield gives you swatches. See Swatches.

Filter by metafield

The Search & Discovery app can turn a product or variant metafield into a filter, such as "Material" or "Skin type". Vellora shows it like any other filter. See Collections and filters.

Metaobjects

Metaobjects are structured entries you can reuse, such as a designer profile or a color. Create definitions in Settings > Metafields and metaobjects and add entries in Content > Metaobjects. Vellora uses metaobjects through swatches and through any setting you connect to a metaobject's fields.

Tips

  • Name metafields for what they mean, not where they appear. "Fit position" is clearer than "Block 3 value".
  • Add validation to the definition, such as a maximum length for labels, so mistakes are caught when you type them.
  • Test a product without a value to check the page still looks right.
