Getting started
Migrate from another theme
Move to Vellora without losing content, and know which settings, apps and customizations you need to set up again.
Switching themes changes how your store looks, not what it sells. Products, collections, pages, blog posts, menus, customers and orders stay exactly as they are. What doesn't move is anything stored in your old theme: its settings, its section layouts and any code edits.
What carries over and what doesn't
| Carries over | Needs setting up again |
|---|---|
| Products, variants, media and prices | Theme settings: colors, fonts, logo |
| Collections and their rules | Home page and other section layouts |
| Pages and blog posts | App blocks and app embeds |
| Menus | Code added to the old theme's files |
| Metafields and metaobjects | Text you changed in Edit default theme content |
| URLs, page titles and meta descriptions | Alternate templates from the old theme |
| Markets, languages and translations of your content | Theme-specific translations |
Before you start
- Duplicate your live theme. Go to Online Store > Themes, click ... next to your live theme and choose Duplicate. Keep the copy as a backup.
- List your apps. Note which apps show something on the storefront and where: a reviews block, a size chart, a chat button.
- List your alternate templates. In the old theme editor, open the page menu and note any templates besides the defaults, such as
product.preorderorpage.lookbook. - Take screenshots of your home page, a product page and a collection page so you can compare.
Step by step
- Add Vellora to your theme library. Don't publish it yet.
- In the theme editor, set your logo, colors and fonts under Theme settings.
- Check your menus. The header uses the menu called
main-menu. In the footer, the Shop Menu block showsmain-menuand the Help block showsfooter. If your old theme used different menus, choose them in the Header and Footer sections. See Navigation and mega menu. - Rebuild the home page with Vellora's sections. The section reference shows what each one does.
- Set up the product page blocks. See Product pages.
- Recreate your alternate templates. See Templates below.
- Add your apps again. See Apps below.
- Preview, then publish.
Templates
Vellora includes alternate page templates called page.about, page.contact and page.faq. If a page is assigned to a template that Vellora doesn't have, Shopify shows it with the default template.
To recreate an alternate template:
- In the theme editor, open the page menu and choose the template type, such as Products.
- Click Create template, give it the same name as in your old theme, and base it on the default.
- Customize it. Pages, products or collections already assigned to a template with that name use it automatically.
Apps
- App blocks don't move. Add them again in the theme editor. On product pages, use Add block in the Product information section. Elsewhere, add the Apps section.
- App embeds need to be turned on again. In the theme editor, open App embeds in the left bar.
- Apps that edited theme code don't work in Vellora until you set them up again. Check the app's settings or contact its developer.
Things to check
- Product reviews. Vellora shows star ratings from the standard product rating metafield (
reviews.rating), which most review apps fill in. See Metafields. - Color swatches. Vellora uses Shopify's swatches, set on product options. Swatches based on tags or file names in your old theme won't show. See Swatches.
- Filters. Filters are set in the Search & Discovery app, not in the theme, so they carry over. See Collections and filters.
- Customer accounts. Vellora is built for customer accounts, not legacy accounts. See Customer accounts.
- Cart features. If your old theme or an app showed a free shipping bar, gift wrapping or upsells in the cart, compare it with Vellora's built-in cart features before you keep both.
- Store text. If you changed button labels or messages in your old theme's default content, make the same changes in Vellora. See Translations and languages.
